The Generosity of Strangers: How a Gentleman I Had Just Met Helped Me Obtain the Position That Transformed My Existence

During the final years of the 1980s, I was embarking on a budget travel adventure to the European continent with a friend. Because my travel mate was considering pursuing a master’s degree in New York, we had arranged a fortnight visit there on the way to London.

We arrived at the postgrad residence, a large multi-story edifice on the Manhattan's Upper West Side called International House. Setting down our luggage, we headed straight to the canteen, where we got some food, sat down, and began chatting with fellow residents.

Beside me was an Iraqi man studying engineering at an Ivy League institution. He inquired what I did, and I told him that I had newly finished with a degree in science and had been performing experiments using an electron microscope.

He noted that there was an electron microscope unit at the university – adjacent to the engineering department, which was why he was aware of it. He proposed that I consider applying for a position with them. I dismissed the idea, explaining that I was heading off to Europe and, even more importantly, I didn’t have a US visa.

The next day I went out exploring, going back to the cafeteria that night. The Iraqi student came up to me and informed me that he had set up a meeting for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Since he had made the arrangement, I attended the interview – but right away explained to my host that I was without a work permit, so I was unable to accept the role.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a metropolis where opportunities abound – she said: “We can make that happen. When can you start?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I held that position for a trio of years. One of the benefits was that I was granted no-cost classes at Columbia, and I took advantage to finish a postgrad program in international relations.

I lost touch with him and I don’t even know his identity, but his incredible act of kindness transformed my future in numerous aspects. I lacked the confidence or self-assurance to contact anyone at an prestigious college and seek a position. Moreover, I had long dreamed to take classes in another country, but lacked the financial means without that tuition waiver.

Critically, that gig at Columbia led me to a position in Switzerland where I met my handsome spouse from France, with whom I now have a family of four kids. It was a total sliding doors moment. That helpful person set me on a different course in life, and I’m forever grateful.
