Fresh analysis indicates that patients who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals purchasing these treatments should be aware of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
The team point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually see a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Doctors suggest the way of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Condition?
The NHS recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch activating and you become extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
