A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” declared the country's president.
The leader reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his government's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The building of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in public works. They were completed at an accelerated speed, defying forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised ongoing concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate halt in the building and running of all such projects.
This halt was suggested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "calls for immediate answers."
In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in total adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these vital undertakings.
